Recently, good news arrived. The practical achievements of the Huoshan Dendrobium Genetic Resources Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) initiative have been selected for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's 2026 List of Best Practices in Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use, becoming the only case selected from Anhui Province.

The project will be officially showcased at China's main event for the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, to be held in Chongming District, Shanghai.

It is reported that the Ministry of Ecology and Environment launched the call for submissions for these practice achievements on January 20, 2026. The initiative aimed to identify outstanding experiences and innovative approaches in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use across the country. Out of numerous submissions, only ten exemplary cases were selected, with the Huoshan initiative standing out for its distinctive features and remarkable results.

The exhibition is organized into six themed sections: “Beautiful Huoshan: An Ecological Wonderland,” “Sharing Benefits with Communities for Harmonious Coexistence,” “A Millennium Legacy: The Enduring Story of a Legendary Herb,” “Traditional Knowledge on Biodiversity,” and “The Finest of the Nine Immortal Herbs: A Premium Medicinal and Edible Resource.” Together, these sections provide a comprehensive showcase of Huoshan's practical approach to the management of Dendrobium genetic resources.

Over the years, Huoshan has placed regulated access and fair benefit-sharing at the heart of its management of Dendrobium genetic resources. By giving equal emphasis to standardized management and technological innovation, while promoting both community benefits and ecological conservation, it has successfully established a virtuous cycle of conservation, research, utilization, and reinvestment in conservation. This approach has not only safeguarded this valuable biological resource, but also provided a replicable model for the sustainable use of genetic resources and high-quality local development across China.
